UPDATE 05/26/21: Apex Legends’ new abandonment penalty for Arenas got off to a pretty rough start, as the feature was temporarily disabled after accidentally punishing innocent players.
As noted in the original story below, some players have reported receiving 10 minute bans for quitting during the end screen animations – even though the match itself was already over. Communications Director Ryan K. Rigney explained that “this problem was related to the logic of the game after all members of the opposing Arenas team left the game.
“Basically you will still get a starting penalty sometimes after you leave the game empty,” he said. in a tweet. “It’s one of those things that never came up in game testing. Stupid bug! The fix should be quick.”
As a result, Respawn has disabled starting penalties in arenas while the team is working on a fix. The tweet mentions that a fix is expected to arrive later this week, which will hopefully see the penalty system reintroduced.
A little @PlayApex update:
We have temporarily disabled starting penalties in arenas due to the system that sometimes issues inappropriate penalties.
The fix is scheduled for later this week. We will therefore notify you when we have resolved the problem and reinstated the penalties.

ORIGINAL STORY 5/25/21: A much-requested feature has finally been introduced in Apex Legends’ Arenas mode, as 3v3 team deathmatch now has a starting penalty – which should hopefully deter players to get rid of their teammates.
Several changes were announced via patch notes posted on Twitter, including the new abandonment penalty for Arenas games. Respawn explained that this is similar to the penalty for Ranked Battle Royale games and will apply to those who leave a full squad in the middle of a match.

Sadly, it appears that a few people are currently being unfairly punished by the new sanction, with some reporting being slapped with 10-minute bins for exit during end screen animations. Director of Communications Ryan K. Rigney assured a player that the team was investigating the problem.

We’re restoring the slow effect on Wattson’s fences, introducing starting penalties in arenas, improving the distribution of loot for backpacks, and more!

Once the issues are resolved, the quitting penalty should discourage players from stopping games prematurely. Many in the Apex Legends community had pointed this out as an issue, reporting that players often left matches as soon as they started to lose. However, not everyone is happy with the new penalty: a player expressed his frustration having to waste time with AFK teammates in an occasional Arenas match, unable to leave without getting a penalty. You gain a little, you lose a little.
Another change to note is that Wattson’s fences have been partially restored in this update. Wattson’s fences last month suffered from a glitch that removed their slowing effect, which makes the kit quite ineffective. The new patch restores this effect, as you can see in the demo below (with a very slow Octane):

The hotfix also fixes a number of annoying bugs – adding an entry delay to Valkyrie’s Ultimate to prevent players from accidentally canceling the ability, for example, as well as fixing “various arena bugs and errors.” . Loot distribution has been tweaked in Arenas, with more backpacks spawning on the ground rather than hidden in loot bins. The XP Survival Time you can gain in Arenas is also temporarily increased until Respawn can adjust the Survival Time calculations to include the Purchase Phase. Oh, and you can’t use this Valkyrie shooting range feat to boost your stats anymore – it just won’t fly.
