Nintendo threw a grenade the size of a King Bob-omb at the American social fabric yesterday when it announced that Hollywood leading man and charming village idiot Chris Pratt would be mario. That’s right, the Italian plumber is finally reappearing on the big screen after a nearly 30-year hiatus. The Marvel superhero and former Parks and Rec schlub seemed like the last person Nintendo would tap into for the role, so of course, he did just that.
“Imagine surviving two recessions and a pandemic only to have to endure Chris Pratt as Mario,” tweeted a person. “It’s been a while since we’ve had to come together and bully an online movie studio to make drastic changes to an animated film, but I think we can do it again,” wrote another, referencing that time when collective internet outcry forced Paramount Pictures to delay the Sonic movie so visual effects artists could fix his legs. or like someone put it“Finding out that Chris Pratt is going to be Mario is the exact opposite feeling of finding out that Idris Elba is Knuckles.
Chris Pratt has risen to fame over the past two years for being the Hollywood’s Worst Chris, at least in some corners of public opinion. That’s why at least one random online individual was able to predict Nintendo’s shocking reveal across the clairvoyant power of shitposting. But still, why are so many people so disappointed with this casting choice, so much so that true statements like “Fred Armisen will voice Cranky Kong” have already been relegated to back page news?
There are a lot of layers to untangle in this shit, so let’s start with the first and most obvious. People seem first and foremost unenthusiastic because they’re just sick of seeing Chris Pratt’s face everywhere. When the Minnesota-born actor originally broke out as Parks and Recreation’s slacker shoe shine boyfriend Andy Dwyer, he was a lovable goof that no one knew much about. That is, aside from the fact that Pratt made them laugh with his absurd antics on Thursday night, near the end of the last crushing week at work. He was there if you needed him, optional and aside like a bowl of roasted peanuts at the bar.
Now you can no longer escape him. A decade later, he’s Hollywood’s latest attempt at trying to manufacture an old-school star. His transformation began as the bearded special ops guy tasked with helping capture Osama Bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirty. Then he was the voice of box office success, the eternal optimist of Lego Movie. And in 2014, Marvel placed him in the deliberately obnoxious (but sympathetic) head of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Since then, he’s also become the affable but heartbroken dinosaur wrestler in three new Jurassic Park films, reprized the role of Star-Lord in three subsequent Marvel films, released a sequel to The Lego Movie, and established himself as a prominent romantic interest. starring with Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence in Passengers. Last month, he starred in the sci-fi shooter, The Tomorrow War, which channeled male panic to champion the unsung blue-collar white at a resounding 53% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some might say it was overexposed. Now he is also Mario.
Which brings us to the second big mark against Chris Pratt playing Nintendo’s signature Italian sweater: he’s not Italian. That shouldn’t matter, especially not when it comes to voice acting, but Pratt isn’t exactly inspiring confidence right now.
“It’s ah me, ah Mario,” he said in Instagram video posted last night with the exact same voice I would use if I was pretending to be Chris Pratt pretending to be Mario. “It’s not the voice, you’ll have to wait to hear the voice, but we worked hard on it and I’m so thrilled to announce that I’m the voice of this video game I dreamed of playing as a kid. .”
For decades, Mario has been voiced in games by Charles Martinet who is also not Italian but is an experienced, theater-trained voice actor specializing in accents and dialects. He’ll be involved in the new movie in some way, but at this point, just another avenue for Nintendo to troll longtime fans, it seems. Meet Swift make various Mario Bros. characters. off the cuff without sweating. While Nintendo is unlikely to bring Swift into the fold when recognizable A-list stars have signed up for the film, many are still disappointed.
But why do some people really hate that Pratt is the new Hollywood face of the game’s number one mascot? Well, it probably has to do with the fact that he was accused of going to church (Zoe Church) associated with anti-LGBTQ bigotry of another church from which it is inspired (Hillsong). Hillsong has been accused of engaging in gay conversion therapy, and his pastor has said the church does not condone a “gay lifestyle”.
“His church is notoriously anti lgbtq”, Elliot Page tweeted in 2019 when Pratt was showing off his witty bona fides on late night television while shilling for The Lego Movie 2. Pratt replied saying that “nothing could be further from the truth and that the doors of his church were open to ‘absolutely everyone’.”
It has become a common two-step process for Pratt, with his insipid remarks on some of the most pressing injustices of our time causing people to try to get to the bottom of one’s political opinions. The Guardians of the Galaxy star’s name started trending on Twitter ahead of the 2020 presidential election after being notably absent from a fundraiser led by the actors of the Avengers for then-Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Was he secretly a Trump supporter? Just another centrist “pox on both your houses” third way? Some people don’t care about political ideology or an actor’s partisan leanings, but when you’re constantly at the center of all the big chunks of pop culture and you’re a multi-millionaire movie star with a knack for subtly spicing on both sidespeople are starting to wonder if you’re truly a free thinker or just an asshole.
Of course, Pratt has plenty of defenders. Including other Hollywood stars. When the War of the “Worst Chris” memes relaunched last fall, Marvel colleagues Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. and James Gunn rushed into the breach to tell the internet to stop picking on their dear friend. So does Pratt’s wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger (yes, he married into both the Schwarzenegger family and, by extension, the Kennedys), so does Guardians co-star Zoe Saldana, famous Tupac city“Me Against The World” to rally Pratt’s base.
Is there a chance Nintendo will change its mind here? If anyone can resist and/or remain oblivious to the public outcry, it’s the company that seems almost having fun denying his fanbase. But who knows. Fates work in mysterious ways, like Pratt himself will tell you“i just realized the quarter i stole from the wishing well to play super mario bros. came true that i can be the voice of mario but i clearly stole someone’s wish another then I’m just waiting for that line of Karma dominoes to come crashing down on me.
Update 2:25 PM ET: 06/06/2022: Nintendo has now given us our first teaser image for the upcoming Mario movie starring Chris Pratt, with the Japanese company set to reveal the full trailer later today during Comic-Con. Sadly, Mario’s entire ass seems to be missing right now. It is not yet known what Pratt, who clearly loves her own assthink about that.
